So let's talk... Cuban music and dance... does it get the respect it deserves outside Cuba? Today, "salsa music" we can hear nearly anywhere ... but often stripped of all the rhythmic explosions, surprises, and transitions that get Cubans dancing. Why don't non-Cubans seem to appreciate the most delicious parts? "Salsa dancing" we see often outside Cuba. But usually the dancers ignore what the musicians are doing and what the other dancers are doing... whereas in Cuba, the interplay is the fun. And why does "salsa" seem to translate to "acrobatics" in the hands of North American salsa schools, why do students not seem to notice the difference? Are the trends in Cuban Music disturbing today? Are leading musicians so desperate to become popular outside Cuba, they would abandon the sophistication of their own music?
